The role of educational advisers at the European Schools
The Educational Advisers play a crucial role in the European Schools and are an important part of the positive school environment that we strive to maintain. The demands of the Educational Advisers are high; they need to nurture a conducive positive educational environment, encompassing the holistic well-being of pupils, managing behavior and discipline, organizing studies and examinations as well as facilitating effective communication among various stakeholders, implementing strategic planning and policy development.
As part of the professional development programme for the future Accredited European School Tyrol (AES Tyrol), a seminar on “The Role of Educational Advisers at the European Schools” was held in Innsbruck on 7 November 2024, led by Linda Blomdahl, Swedish Educational Adviser and Inspector at the European Schools. The event was organized by the Tyrolean Department of Education and supported by the Tyrolean Chamber of Commerce.
The seminar brought together teachers, school leaders and representatives of the AES Tyrol to explore the key responsibilities, tools and mindset needed for the role of Educational Advisers (EAs) within the European Schools system. Drawing on European-wide practices, Linda Blomdahl introduced participants to a coaching-based approach to educational guidance, focusing on relationship-building, self-reflection, well-being and emotional intelligence as central pillars of effective advisory work.
Through interactive elements and practical exercises, participants engaged with coaching models such as GROW, explored the power of active listening, and reflected on the impact of mindsets and communication styles in everyday school life. The seminar also included a presentation and discussion of the AES Tyrol-specific job profile for Educational Advisers and offered a platform for reflection and exchange on how the role can be shaped locally within the broader European framework.
The training day was part of a larger, multi-part programme that addresses topics such as leadership, conflict management, inclusive communication and professional collaboration. It highlighted the importance of trust, partnership, and clarity of values in creating a supportive school climate – one in which pupils, teachers, and school leaders can grow together.
